Biological Environment


North of outfall (The Water Board (1991a,b)

South of outfall

  • Intertidal Zone 1: sea lettuce (Ulva lactuca) and gastropod species.

  • Intertidal Zone 2: barnacles (T. rosea), coralline algae (C. officinalis) and gastropod species.

  • Intertidal Zone 3: coralline algae (C. officinalis), red turfing algae and gastropod species.

Subtidal habitats

  • Ecklonia (Kelp) Reef : brown algae (Ecklonia and Sargassum) with a secondary cover of Corallinaceae and Amphiroa; urchins (Heliocidaris erythrogramma and Centrostephanus rodgersii), large gastropods (Turbo torquatus, Austrailium tentiforme, Cabestana spengleri and less commonly Thais orbita), ascidians and limpets (Patella chapmani).

  • Mixed Reef (Foliose algae, filamentous algae and sessile invertebrates): primary cover of Zonaria, Sargassum and Dictyota with Caulerpa common in some areas. The secondary cover consisted of Amphiroa, Ralfsia and encrusting Corallinaceae algae.

  • Sand Channels: tubeworms (Diopatra dentata and colonies of tubeworms from the family Chaetopteridae) and macroalgae (Caulerpa, Zonaria, Sargassum and Ecklonia).
